It is the 18th of February. It is a little known fact that today is also the National Battery Day. It is a day on which we appreciate this incredible invention – the battery.
In 1745, on the 18th of February, an Italian physicist and pioneer Alessandro Volta was born. In the 1800 he invented the voltaic pile – possibly the first chemical battery. The measuring unit for electric potential – the Volt is named after him. The great Italian was also made count by Napoleon Bonaparte for his amazing invention. Volta died on March 5, 1827 but his work continued to live on. The technology behind the battery has been evolving rapidly and many different types of batteries have been invented, including the first rechargeable lead acid battery, invented by the Frenchman Gaston Plante in 1859.
Just imagine where the world would be without batteries. We would not be able to have mobile phones or computers as we know them today. We would have to be using a crank to start our cars and carry extension cords everywhere if we want portable technology. Batteries are used in so many applications! They help start or completely power cars, electric wheelchairs, scooters, motorcycles, golf cars and even boats. They power our alarm systems and our UPS devices when the power goes out.
